SECOND SUNDAY IN MAY: DAY OF THE VIRGEN DE LOS DESAMPARADOS
The second Sunday in May is celebrated in Valencia on the day of the Virgen de los Desamparados, patron saint of the city.
Many events are held on this weekend and on nearby days, but the most impressive for the traveller are the "Misa d'Infants" (Infant Mass) at 8 am on Sunday in the Plaza de la Virgen, the subsequent "Transfer" to the Cathedral at around 10.30 am and, in the afternoon, the "Procession of the Virgin".
The streets of the historic centre are dressed like never before to receive the procession and as the Virgin passes by, flower petals rain down from the balconies.
It is a time to see Valencia as never before, to discover palaces closed at other times and, of course, to take incredible photographs in a very typical Valencian festive atmosphere.
